The CO2 Fractional Laser holds an important place in dermatological applications; it belongs to a class of lasers that heal the skin by causing controlled damage to it, producing deep effects. It is one of the solutions used to treat acne, wound, burn or cut scars, and it is also effective for the cosmetic correction of wrinkles and stretch marks and for skin renewal.
How Does the Fractional Laser Treat the Skin?
Carbon dioxide laser beams interact with water molecules in the tissue; tissue is vaporized in columns roughly 120 microns in diameter. During this, collagen fibers contract, and the healthy tissue islands surrounding the vaporized tissue enter a rapid healing process.
How Does the Fractional CO2 Laser Show Its Effects?
The laser delivers light to the skin in tiny-diameter columns, creating controlled heat damage. Cells migrate from healthy areas to the damaged area; these cells synthesize collagen and elastin, initiating the healing process and rapidly repairing the skin region.
What Is the Fractional CO2 Laser Used For?
- Acne pits and acne scars
- Skin rejuvenation, lightening fine lines
- Tightening pores
- Skin discoloration
- Treatment of seborrheic keratosis, skin tags, cherry angiomas, warts and calluses
- Stretch marks, scar tissue, post-surgical suture marks
- Increased water-retention capacity of the skin through collagen/elastin synthesis
What to Watch for After Treatment
- The treated area should not come into contact with water, makeup or touch for 24 hours after the procedure.
- Sun protection is important for 1 week after the procedure; SPF 30+ sunscreen should be reapplied every 2 hours.
- The pinhead-sized crusts that begin to form after 3-5 days should not be picked at (due to risk of discoloration).
- The treatment plan recommended by the doctor should be followed completely.
